Back in the day, the best you could hope for whenever you received a package was some broken candy from your great aunt. But since the arrival of internet shopping, we’re all a lot more excited to hear that the mail carrier has something for us.
And especially when it’s from ASOS!
Founded in London in 2000, ASOS was one of the first fashion retailers to operate solely online. While other retailers were slow to incorporate web sales into their brand structure, ASOS was right out in front for the young adult online shoppers they aimed to attract.
The original name of ASOS was AsSeenOnScreen, with the tagline, “buy what you see on film and TV.” It was this that resonated most with me, my friends, and the brand’s many other 20-something customers.
Keen to buy into the celebrity world by emulating Paris and Britney’s latest looks or sporting the same cargo pants JLo wore in her music video, we loved how ASOS made this possible for us. This star appeal, combined with cool styling and a constant influx of new products, meant that the orders came rolling in thick and fast for ASOS.
Since those early days, ASOS has gone from strength to strength, launching several of its own labels, expanding its influence beyond the UK to Europe, Asia, Australia, and the United States, and incorporating a marketplace platform for independent boutiques to trade globally.
Although, that’s not to say that ASOS hasn’t faced setbacks and controversies along the way. An attempt to branch out into childrenswear failed in spectacular fashion (no pun intended!), while there have been several reports of poor working conditions in its UK warehouses.
Despite all that, ASOS remains a cornerstone of online retail, offering its customers a choice of top-quality fashion and beauty brands, as well as original ASOS designs.
In short, for me and many others, ASOS is a one-stop shop for everything you need to look great!
