Have you ever found yourself purchasing the same product in different countries, only to be surprised by significant differences in taste, components, and price? Variations in product quality and pricing are prevalent in today’s global marketplace. For instance, the Big Mac index, initially created as a tool for understanding exchange-rate theory, has become a global standard to compare prices across countries. Products like Ikea’s meatballs, Coca-Cola, Nescafe coffee, among others can vary in taste, ingredients, and price from one country to another. These variations often result from adapting to local preferences, weather conditions and irrigation, differences in taxes, import duties, and perceived value. Also, let’s not forget that human’s memory for food is as short as human’s memory for sex, making it easier for brands to get away with their identical worldwide production.
Significant variations in price and functionality also apply to cars, electronics, etc…
What factors do you think have the most significant impact on these global product variations? Which product have you personally tried lately and could tell the difference in price and components?
