The Oxford dictionary defines luxury as “an inessential, desirable item which is expensive or difficult to obtain” and “a state of great comfort or elegance, especially when involving significant expense.”
While luxury items are typically associated with high costs, it’s important to recognize that the concept of luxury is subjective and can vary greatly from one individual to another. Some individuals may find luxury in simple pleasures or experiences that do not necessarily come with a hefty price tag.
Reflecting on my own experiences, I recall the years when I resided in Dubai, my lifestyle revolved around luxury brands, extravagant cars, high-end fashion, private jets, leisurely activities, extravagant dining, diamond jewelry, and yacht parties. At the time, I considered myself fortunate.
However, when I later relocated to Amsterdam, my life took a completely different turn. Most “Amsterdamians” did not prioritize luxury brands, fancy jewelry, or exclusive automobiles, despite having the means to do so. Instead, they took pleasure in selecting fresh, organic fruits and vegetables from year-round morning markets, consuming their own tap mineral water, joyfully experiencing all four seasons, enjoying skating on frozen lakes and canals, and maintaining a well-balanced work-life stress-free, the daily opportunity to savor fresh air and the quotidian living in UNESCO-preserved historical views that are over four centuries old. This lifestyle, too, embodied lots of luxury. In fact, in Amsterdam, preloved shops are almost everywhere, but mind you, these people have nothing to do with poverty. I promise you. It’s just a different philosophy of life.
Upon reflection, I now recognize how truly fortunate I was to have experienced both aspects of luxury: the luxury of brands/material possessions and the luxury of enriching experiences. These were two distinct lives that I genuinely cherished and held in equal regard. This, to me, epitomizes the essence of luxury.
Am Lola, and I invite you to contemplate in the comments below your personal definition of luxury and how you perceive it. Please share your opinions with us at Jestafreak.com, as we are eager to hear whether you lean towards luxury through brands or luxury through experiences.
“I completely relate to this perspective on luxury! When me and my family lived in New York City, it was all about high-end fashion and exclusive parties. But after moving to a cozy cottage in the countryside, our definition of luxury was transformed. Now, it’s all about the serenity of nature and homemade farm-to-table meals. My children would never want to move back to the city”.
“Wow, this narrative reminds me of my time in Tokyo and then later in Bali. In Tokyo, luxury meant Michelin-starred restaurants and designer boutiques, but in Bali, it shifted to sunrise yoga on the beach and exploring lush rice terraces. Both were amazing experiences!”
Totally agree @Michael2022. Both are amazing experiences.
“I’ve always believed that true luxury is about the moments that take your breath away. Whether it’s a breathtaking sunset over the Grand Canyon or at the top of Burj Khalifa or the joy of sharing a simple meal with loved ones, those moments define luxury for me. Now that we live in Dubai, my kids are experiencing this totally different lifestyle from what they had in Belarus my home country.”
“This story resonates with me on a deep level. I went from a high-pressure corporate job in London, where luxury was all about penthouse apartments and fine wines, to a peaceful village in Sorrento, in Italy. Now, it’s all about rustic dinners with local wine and embracing the slower pace of life.”
“Oh Naples!!! Am jealous”
“Hahaha! My wife envies you for your lifestyle in Dubai!”
“I’m reminded of my travels in India. Luxury there was experiencing ancient temples, vibrant markets, and delicious street food. It’s amazing how different cultures redefine what luxury means.”
