For many of us Nutella and Kinder Surprise (“The Chocolate Egg”), are part of growing up. The Kinder chocolate brand has been part of my life for over 40 years. I will never forget my love for the Kinder Surprise, the chocolate egg with white and milk chocolate, and, of course, a surprise inside. Every fortnight, as a child, I could buy or receive a Kinder Surprise. The real thrill was collecting the metal knights there were so many of them! My only clue to getting one was the weight of the egg. Would this be the one with my next knight?

Sometimes I would forget to remind my parents to pick the heavier ones, so I would not end up with a plastic car, puzzle, or something else instead. Besides the surprise, my favorite part was carefully separating the two halves without breaking the chocolate. I loved savoring it.

Kinder Products by Ferrero Group
You might not know but Nutella, Kinder Surprise, and Ferrero Rocher are owned by the same company – Italy’s Ferrero Group. The Kinder story began in 1968 in Alba, Italy, where Michele Ferrero introduced Kinder. It wasn’t until 1974 that Kinder Surprise was created to bring children the excitement of Easter egg surprises year-round.
Over the past 50 years, the brand has been highly proactive in developing a wide range of new Kinder products. Surprisingly, the variety of Kinder chocolate experiences available varies not only by country but even by individual supermarkets. Whenever I am in Germany, I compare the unique selections. Here you can find the most diverse Kinder range and I encourage you to check it out when you are there. Alternatively, check out the German Kinder website.
The Kinder products, interestingly, are designed to appeal to both children and adults, trying to balance sweetness with playful elements like hidden toys and layered textures. Most products combine creamy milk chocolate with different fillings and textures to create a unique treat experience. This includes hazelnut flavors reminiscent of Nutella or the layered structure found in Ferrero Rocher. We have listed some well-known Kinder products:
Kinder Riegel is a popular chocolate bar combining smooth milk chocolate with a creamy milk filling and is slightly bigger at 21 grams than the Kinder Chocolate.
Biscuit bars shaped like hippos, filled with creamy milk and hazelnut or chocolate cream.
Kinder Cards are crisp wafers, one side covered in milk chocolate and inside filled with creamy milk. They offer a blend of crunchy and creamy textures. Each biscuit is individually wrapped.
Kinder Joy (the other egg), is a split egg with one half containing a creamy chocolate and wafer layer and the other half hiding a toy.
Smooth milk chocolate bars, specially designed with children in mind, contain a creamy milk filling.
Kinder Bueno is a chocolate bar with a crispy wafer filled with creamy hazelnut filling, covered in smooth milk chocolate.

Kinder and Festive Experiences
Kinder over the years has been creating unique, festive experiences for the holiday season, with special treats like Advent calendars, holiday-themed chocolates, and gift boxes.
The Kinder Advent Calendar is a popular choice, featuring a 24-day countdown filled with a variety of Kinder chocolates, from mini Kinder Buenos to Kinder Eggs.
Additionally, Kinder offers seasonal gift boxes shaped like snowflakes, Christmas trees, or holiday ornaments, adding a touch of holiday cheer to each treat. These festive packages make for delightful stocking stuffers and thoughtful gifts, perfect for celebrating the season with the surprise and joy Kinder is known for.

So will I continue to buy Kinder. I must admit, I love Kinder chocolate and especially the Kinder Surprise egg. But perhaps for a different reason that you might think.
Recently, I overheard people talking about texture and the perfect balance of thinness in chocolate. To me it explains why the Kinder chocolate bars do not quite taste the same for me, there is something about the combination of the Kinder chocolate and the thin chocolate layered structure, and maybe a hint of nostalgia that makes the original Kinder Surprise experience every time unforgettable.
