Spotlight on: Ferrari

My first car ever was a Ferrari!

A beautiful red F430. A gift from my boyfriend back then. But listen to this, I gave it back when I broke up with him. I know. I know. I soon regretted that decision so badly! LOL.

Ferrari S.p.A. is a renowned Italian luxury sports car manufacturer based in Maranello, founded by Enzo Ferrari in 1939. The company produced its first car in 1940, officially adopted its name in 1945, and began producing its modern line of road cars in 1947. Ferrari became a public entity in 1960 and, after being a subsidiary of Fiat from 1963 to 2014, it separated from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in 2016. Noted for its extensive model range, including supercars, grand tourers, and an SUV, Ferrari has a rich history in racing, particularly in Formula One, where its team, Scuderia Ferrari, is the oldest and most successful.

Some Interesting Ferrari Stories

Ferrari’s brand, synonymous with luxury and high performance, was recognized as the world’s strongest by Brand Finance in 2019 and continues to be one of the largest car manufacturers by market capitalization, valued at $78.62 billion as of March 2024.

It is said that in 1923, Enzo Ferrari won an opportunity to meet Count Enrico Baracca and Countess Paolina Baracca in person after winning a race at the Savio circuit in Ravenna. And it was there when the Countess suggested Enzo should brand his vehicles with the prancing horse for good luck. The famous prancing horse logo, which symbolizes Ferrari’s racing prowess, has become one of the most recognizable and revered trademarks in the automotive industry

It’s not every day that the birth of a global enterprise can be traced back to a single conversation, but the legend of Lamborghini’s origin is just that. Ferruccio Lamborghini, having built a thriving tractor business post-World War II, owned several Ferrari sports cars by the early 1960s. The tale goes that in 1962, Lamborghini, fed up with recurring clutch issues, took one of his Ferraris back to the factory to confront Enzo Ferrari himself. Enzo allegedly quipped,

“Maybe you should learn how to drive”

a comment that so irked Lamborghini that he decided to start his own car company to rival Ferrari. While historians question the specifics of this story, there’s no denying that Ferruccio Lamborghini set out to compete directly with Enzo Ferrari.

Not that I’m planning to buy a new Ferrari anytime soon, but I’ve discovered it’s quite a challenge to get one, and that’s by design. You can’t simply stroll into a Ferrari dealership and drive off in a new car.

Modern Ferraris are mostly custom ordered, with buyers selecting every detail from paint color to interior upholstery, making each car unique. Delivery of these custom-built beauties can take months or even years. Ferrari intentionally limits the number of orders for each model, creating fierce competition among customers.

Most dealerships prioritize repeat customers, who first buy and sell used Ferraris to build a relationship with the dealer. This strategy harks back to Enzo Ferrari’s philosophy:

“We will build one car less than the market demands.”

Ferrari is expecting to launch electric cars by 2026, but don’t expect them to tiptoe quietly. The roar of the engine is essential to the Ferrari experience – and I totally agree with that – whether it’s the harmonious V6, the symphonic V8, or the wailing V12. Ferrari is diving into the electric supercar market, but it is said that even their all-electric models will boast a “sound signature” designed to “stir emotions and rival the iconic roar of their combustion engines.”

Nevertheless, Ferrari’s back-to-back victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023 and 2024 with a hybrid electric-powered Ferrari are unique achievements, solidifying Ferrari’s position at the pinnacle of car racing manufacturers in this new era.

Well, I hope to afford to buy a Ferrari one day, but in the meantime I hope you enjoyed these fascinating facts you didn’t know about this iconic beautiful brand.
